Los Santos Zone (Spanish: Zona de los Santos) is a mountainous region in the San José Province of Costa Rica, in the center-south of the country. It is also known in Spanish as Valle de los Santos or just Los Santos.
It corresponds to a wide sector of a series of intermontane valleys composed by the cantons of Tarrazú, Dota and León Cortés Castro. The nearby districts of San Cristóbal and Frailes, both of Desamparados canton, are under the socioeconomic influence of the zone.
Adding the surface of the three cantons, the area is around 863 square kilometers.
Currently the region is called the Coffee Axis of the southeast of the country.
In general, these are eminently rural cantons, with average levels of human development in the Costa Rican context.
The basis of the economy is the cultivation and marketing of coffee; one of the best coffee varieties in the world with Protected Designation of Origin. Production is increasingly focused on growing specialty coffee for international markets, in particular the US market.
A sector that is becoming increasingly important for Los Santos is ecological and adventure tourism. The most visited site in the region is the Los Quetzales National Park (until 2005, it was called the Los Santos Forest Biological Reserve), a natural area of great scenic beauty, which covers most of the canton of Dota and is of great importance in conservation. of the local flora and fauna, as well as the protection of aquifers and river sources.11 The interoceanic hiking route of the Camino de Costa Rica crosses this region and benefits different microentrepreneurs in the area.
